Charlotte Symphony's first WDAV broadcast is Sept. 24 PDF Print E-mail

The Sept. 24 broadcast will feature the orchestra's first concert under its new music director, Christopher Warren-Green.

Beginning a 50th- anniversary run with a new 35mm print, "Breathless" is that rare revival that, against noticeable odds, retains the elements that made it celebrated half a century ago.

Humor, menace and loss blend in annual Southern story collection PDF Print E-mail

(By Julia Ridley Smith, Special Correspondent) Twenty-five years ago Algonquin Press editor Shannon Ravenel began publishing a yearly anthology that has since become a fixture in contemporary Southern literature.

"New Stories from the South" features stories that have been published the previous year in magazines. Some of the writers are familiar names (Dorothy Allison, Wendell Berry) others are up-and-coming, but the unifying idea is the stories have a quality of "Southernness."

With elementary school now under way, we're still trying to figure out exactly what time we need to get up. Obviously, we want plenty of time to wake up, leisurely get dressed, have a nice long breakfast, time to talk, and set some personal goals for the day.

Who are we kidding? The object is to sleep as late as possible, and still make the bus.

I have lived in Wesley Chapel in Union County for nine years, but I never came to uptown Charlotte very much until this past year. I used to think uptown was just where "professional people" worked and that was it.

My perspective has changed now that I have graduated from college and am working uptown myself. But shooting this photo essay about the fountains uptown has opened my eyes to a whole new level of life that Charlotte offers.
